This September 5, as the world observes the United Nations' International Day of Charity, Human Appeal is celebrating something it has understood since its founding over three decades ago: that lasting change happens when ordinary people decide to give their time, not just their money. That founding conviction has since grown into a global humanitarian movement reaching over 6 million last year and today, in the United States, it's taking on a distinctly local, hands on shape, one volunteer at a time.
Building Impact, Community by Community
Human Appeal USA has expanded its footprint into communities across the country. This isn't relief delivered from a distance; it's neighbors serving neighbors. Volunteers stock local food pantries, mentor young people navigating difficult circumstances, staff mental health support lines, and mobilize quickly when disaster strikes close to home. Each of these programs runs on the same conviction that built Human Appeal's global relief work: that dignity is restored not through charity alone, but through sustained presence and relationship.
Human Appeal USA's own research underscores just how deep that instinct runs in American communities. Its study, "Volunteering and Charity: The Backbone of American Communities," found that American volunteers give an average of nearly 63 hours a year, valued at close to $1,900 per volunteer, driven overwhelmingly by a desire to help others and strengthen the communities they call home. The same research found that 62% of volunteers focus their time on their local towns, and that volunteering brings real personal reward too, with more than half of respondents reporting a greater sense of community and new friendships formed through their service. Human Appeal USA has built its domestic programming to channel that instinct into concrete, measurable impact, turning goodwill into real support for families navigating hardship.
A Door Open to Everyone
Human Appeal USA makes it remarkably easy to become part of that work. Getting started takes just minutes online, and new volunteers can be out supporting their first event or program within days. Opportunities span a wide range: mentoring a young person, organizing a community fundraiser, supporting a disaster response effort, helping distribute food and essentials, or simply lending time and skills wherever they're needed most. There is no single "type" of Human Appeal USA volunteer, there's a role suited to nearly anyone willing to show up.
That accessibility matters, because the strength of Human Appeal's US work isn't measured only in dollars raised, it's measured in relationships built, hours given, and community trust earned one volunteer shift at a time.
A Universal Language
What makes Human Appeal's volunteer network so powerful, across the US and globally, is its universality. Human Appeal distributes aid and support to everyone equally, regardless of faith, race, language, nationality or gender, and the people who volunteer their time reflect that same breadth. Volunteers show up together to mentor youth, staff support lines, restock pantries, and sit with families who are struggling, motivated by something deeper than obligation: a shared conviction that every person deserves dignity, and that restoring it is a responsibility everyone can share, whatever they believe. That same conviction connects a mentor in Baltimore to a Human Appeal team member delivering aid in Sudan or rebuilding a school in Pakistan, different settings, the same underlying commitment to one another.
International Day of Charity exists to recognize that giving takes many forms, and that time, skill, and presence matter as much as money.
This year, Human Appeal USA is asking supporters across the United States to consider what they can offer: an afternoon mentoring a young person, a weekend at a food distribution, a skill offered to a mental health support program, or simply a willingness to show up.
Because the story of Human Appeal has never really been about aid delivered from a distance, it's about people showing up for other people in communities overseas and across the United States today, one volunteer at a time.
