Is My Donation to a Charity Tax-Deductible? What US Donors Need to Know

Yes — in most cases, your donation to a qualifying charity is tax-deductible in the United States. Here is what “tax-deductible” actually means, which charities qualify, and a 2026 law that changed who can benefit.

What Does “Tax-Deductible” Mean?

A tax deduction reduces the amount of your income that the government taxes. If you earn $60,000 and give $500 to a qualifying charity, you are taxed on $59,500 instead — saving you anywhere from $55 to $185 in taxes depending on your bracket. It is not a rebate; it means your donation costs you slightly less than the full amount.

Which Charities Qualify?

The organisation must be registered with the IRS as a 501(c)(3) public charity. Check via the IRS Tax Exempt Organisation Search. We are a registered 501(c)(3) (Tax ID: 87-2410117) and send an automatic tax receipt with every donation.

Who Can Actually Claim It?

Until 2026, claiming the deduction required listing out individual tax deductions — something only one in ten Americans does. A new law effective from January 2026 changed this. Americans who take the standard deduction can now also deduct donations: up to $1,000 for single filers and $2,000 for married couples. if you list your deductions individually, you can still deduct your full charitable donations as before.

What Types of Donations Count?

The deduction applies to cash and card payments — bank transfers, card donations, cheques, and online payments. It does not apply to donated goods, volunteered time, or raffle tickets. Only the pure gift portion of any transaction qualifies, as set out in the IRS guidelines on charitable contributions.

What Records Do You Need to Keep?

Under $250: a bank statement, card statement, or email confirmation is sufficient. $250 or more: a written acknowledgement from the charity is required — a letter or email confirming the amount and that nothing was given to you in return. We send this automatically with every donation.

When Does the Donation Need to Be Made?

To count for your 2026 taxes, your donation must be completed by December 31, 2026. Online card payments made on December 31 count as long as they process successfully. Cheques count on the postmark date. See our year-end giving guide for the full breakdown.
