Food, medicine and hygiene for Gaza

As families face daily bombardment, half of Gaza is starving, there is no safe place left, and people are at risk of multiple epidemics.

The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, “Whoever draws nearer (to Allah) by performing any of the (optional) good deeds in (this month) shall receive the same reward as performing an obligatory deed at any other time…It is the month of charity, and a month in which a believer's sustenance is increased” (Hadith Ibn Khuzaymah)

This Ramadan, there is no safe place left in Gaza. Families are facing an impossible struggle to survive as they endure bombings, starvation, and displacement. Of the 700,000 people across the globe facing catastrophic hunger, over 80% of them are in Gaza.

The entire population of Gaza does not have enough food, and a third are a step away from total famine. This is the fastest decline of a population’s nutrition status ever recorded.

“We have never seen a civilian population made to go so hungry so quickly and so completely.” – U.N rapporteur on the right to food

As we break our fasts each Maghrib, 2.3 million people in Gaza are struggling to have even a single meal. Be a mercy this Ramadan, and help our local team in Gaza to provide family food parcels and hot meals, as well as tents and medical care in Gaza.

Spiralling deaths

More than 32,000 people have been killed, including over 13,000 children. Over 74,000 people have been wounded, and 8,000 are still missing and suspected to be dead and under the rubble – half of them are children. Now, as the most vulnerable – babies and young children – are beginning to die from starvation and dehydration, another catastrophe awaits if we cannot get more food to the people who need it most.

We are deeply concerned about hunger and hygiene supplies in Gaza. With most people struggling to eat every day and concerning signs of epidemic diseases, we’re urging for more aid to be permitted into Gaza.

Medical crisis: turning off life support and incubators

There are no fully functioning hospitals left in Gaza. Many have been forced to shut due to being sieged or bombed. Only 36% of hospitals in Gaza are able to provide any kind of medical service, which is severely limited by a lack of medical supplies, the threat of attack, and shortages of power and water.

Over 74,000 people have been wounded, and at least 8,000 are still missing and suspected to be dead and under the rubble – half of them are children.

Premature babies had to be removed from their incubators, and life support has turned off for critically ill patients. There are no more services for cancer patients, and the last hospitals still working in the south are full beyond capacity.

Each day, doctors are tirelessly saving numerous lives under challenging circumstances – performing c-sections without anesthesia, using vinegar from the local shop to clean wounds, and forced to amputate children’s limbs that could be saved with proper supplies.

We are urgently concerned about food and hygiene supplies in Gaza. With most people struggling to eat every day and concerning signs of epidemic diseases, we urge more aid to be permitted into Gaza. The UN has warned that bloody diarrhea and jaundice, as well as high levels of infections are a worrying signal of an epidemic.

Destruction and isolation

Hospitals and ambulances continue to be struck, and a staggering 70% of Gaza’s homes are damaged or destroyed. 1.9 million people have been forced to flee their homes, seeking shelter in homes, makeshift shelters, hospitals and UN schools in the south.

This Ramadan, we urge you to stand together with us in this urgent appeal to support families enduring crisis upon crisis Gaza. Donate and help us to provide food, shelter and medical care. Alleviate the devastating hunger in Gaza, and seek Allah’s blessings and mercy in the holy month of Ramadan.

A legacy of support

Human Appeal has been providing vital humanitarian support and development projects in Palestine for 32 years.

Our local team has been providing daily distributions since the start of the bombing in Gaza, providing food, hygiene kits, clean water, and medical supplies.

So far, you’ve helped us to support over 826,430 people. Our waterproof and fire-resistant tents have been installed across 29 schools across the south of Gaza, and our water desalination plant is currently operating for six-to-seven hours a day, providing 57,000 litres of clean water each hour.

We’ve delivered eight planes full of aid – that’s over 240 tons – in partnership with Jordan Hashemite Charity Organisation (JHCO). This essential relief has already provided £3.6 million worth of medicines including antibiotics, anaesthesia, items for surgery, rehabilitation, infant care, pain relief, and prenatal vitamins.

Our convoy of three shipping containers has also entered Gaza, providing over 36 tons of food, 32 crates of winter clothing, as well as 2,000 blankets, and 2,000 mattresses.

This Ramadan, we’re urgently appealing for your support in helping us to provide critical food to save lives in Gaza.

In this month of mercy, be a lifeline to a family in Gaza.
