What are the types of Sadaqah in Islam?

The main types of Sadaqah are: Sadaqah Nafilah (voluntary giving at any time, any amount), Sadaqah Jariyah (ongoing charity whose reward continues after the act), Waqf (a permanent legal dedication of an asset for a charitable purpose), giving on behalf of the deceased, and non-monetary Sadaqah such as kind words, removing harm, or visiting the sick.

What is Sadaqah Jariyah?

Sadaqah Jariyah is ongoing charity whose benefit and reward continue after the donor has passed away. Classic examples include building a water well, constructing a mosque, or funding education. The Prophet (PBUH) named it as one of three deeds whose reward continues after death (Sahih Muslim, hadith 1631).

Can you give Sadaqah on behalf of someone who has passed away?

Yes. The Hanafi, Shafiʼi, and Hanbali schools hold that giving Sadaqah on behalf of a deceased person is valid and the reward can reach them. The Maliki school generally permits the practice as well. Hanbali scholar Ibn Qudama confirms in al-Mughni (vol. 2, p. 226) that any charitable act dedicated to a deceased Muslim benefits them by the will of Allah.

Waqf is a legal form of Sadaqah Jariyah in which you permanently dedicate an asset — land, a building, or money — for the sake of Allah. It cannot be taken back, sold, or redirected. You can establish a Waqf during your lifetime or leave one in your will.

Does non-monetary giving count as Sadaqah?

Yes. The Prophet (PBUH) said that saying a good word, taking steps to the mosque, and removing something harmful from the road all count as Sadaqah (Sahih al-Bukhari, hadith 2989). Sadaqah encompasses any act performed sincerely for the sake of Allah, whether financial or not.

Father and son climb Kilimanjaro for Human Appeal’s humanitarian work

Human Appeal’s Global Director of Fundraising, Zaheer Khan, will travel to Tanzania this summer to climb Mount Kilimanjaro alongside his 16-year-old son, in a powerful father-and-son challenge raising vital funds for Human Appeal’s life-saving humanitarian work.

Mount Kilimanjaro is the world’s highest freestanding mountain, with a summit 5,895 meters (19,341 feet) above sea level.

Over seven days, the pair will take on the world’s highest freestanding mountain, turning a deeply personal promise into a public act of solidarity with communities facing crisis. Zaheer first climbed Kilimanjaro 15 years ago, when his son was just one year old, and made a commitment to return when he turned 50 — and when his son was old enough to climb it with him. The climb was originally planned for last year but was postponed to support his son through exams. In 2026, the goal is finally becoming reality.

The campaign has already raised $35,000 for Human Appeal.

Zaheer Khan, Global Director of Fundraising at Human Appeal, said:

“Fifteen years ago, I stood on Kilimanjaro and promised myself I’d come back when I turned 50 — and that my son would be by my side. This climb is about keeping that promise, but it’s also about showing what’s possible when we turn determination into compassion. If our journey inspires even one more person to give, then every tough mile will be worth it.”
