For innocent families in Syria, violence and chaos are the heartbreaking reality. Over the last month, security operations and air raids have killed at least 224 civilians in the key city of Raqqa.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported on Thursday that at least 28 women and 38 children were among those who lost their lives due to air raids. They currently have no available data for civilians killed in other ways, including by illness, explosive mines or the dangers associated with trying to flee the city.
More than 50,000 civilians are currently trapped in Raqqa according to the United Nations, and although this is half the number reported at the end of June, every single one of these civilians is in grave danger.
The Syrian crisis is now in its seventh year. More than 330,000 people have been killed since the conflict began in March 2011. 13.5 million people are currently in need of immediate humanitarian aid. 9 million people are food insecure, which means that they need assistance finding enough food to eat.
Over half of Syria’s population has been forced to flee their homes, with 6.3 million people displaced within Syria and 5.1 million travelling further afield and living as refugees in neighbouring countries such as Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey. Many families have been displaced multiple times, causing great upheaval and distress, particularly to young children.
In 13 besieged locations, including the city of Raqqa, more than 640,000 people are being denied basic human rights, cut off from clean water, food and basic medical care. It is difficult for aid agencies to access these areas, but people living in these desperate conditions are the most vulnerable to violence, disease, starvation and death.
