In Yemen, the problem is not always that water does not exist underground. Often, it does. The problem is getting it out. Diesel pumps require fuel that conflict and poverty make increasingly difficult to obtain. Grid electricity is unreliable or absent entirely. Families, particularly women and girls, walk hours each day to reach a water source that may not even be clean. A solar powered water well changes that equation — permanently, and without depending on supply chains that war can break.
A solar powered water well uses photovoltaic (PV) solar panels to generate electricity, which powers a submersible pump installed inside a drilled borehole. The pump draws groundwater to the surface, where it is stored in an elevated tank and distributed to the surrounding community.
The Quran references water as a gift from Allah and a source of all living things: "And We made from water every living thing" (Surah Al-Anbiya, 21:30). The Prophet (PBUH) described giving water as among the best forms of charity — a teaching that has shaped Islamic giving toward water infrastructure for centuries.
A solar borehole removes the two most common barriers to water access in humanitarian settings: fuel dependency and grid electricity. Once installed, it runs on sunlight. In a country like Yemen — where fuel is scarce, the grid is damaged, and groundwater is often accessible — solar powered water wells are among the most practical and durable infrastructure investments available.
A solar powered water well installation involves several interconnected components, each essential to long-term functionality:
Site assessment. Hydrogeologists identify where groundwater is accessible, how deep it lies, and whether the water quality meets drinking standards. In Yemen, this work is conducted in coordination with local authorities and community representatives.
Drilling. A drilling rig bores down to the water table — typically between 30 and 150 meters depending on the location. The borehole is lined with casing to prevent collapse and protect water quality.
Pump and panel installation. A submersible pump is lowered into the borehole. Solar panels installed on the surface generate the electricity to run it. A control unit regulates power flow and protects the pump from voltage fluctuation.
Storage and distribution. Water is pumped to an elevated storage tank, from which it flows by gravity to community taps and distribution points.
Community training. Local community members are trained to maintain the system — cleaning panels, replacing worn components, monitoring water quality. This step is critical: the most common reason water projects fail in humanitarian settings is not technical failure but the absence of local capacity to sustain them. A properly trained community water committee can keep a solar powered water well functioning for fifteen to twenty years.
Yemen was already considered one of the most water-scarce countries in the world before the conflict began. Groundwater depletion, limited rainfall, and a rapidly growing population had placed extraordinary pressure on available sources. Years of conflict made a fragile situation critical.
Two factors make solar water wells specifically suited to Yemen:
Fuel dependency. Most existing pumps in Yemen run on diesel. When fuel is unavailable — which is frequent — the pump stops and families go without. A solar powered water well eliminates this dependency entirely.
Women's time burden. In communities without nearby water access, the task of collection falls disproportionately on women and girls, sometimes consuming several hours daily. A functioning solar well within the community frees that time for education, livelihood, and rest.
We are currently building solar-powered water systems in Yemen that will serve over 14,000 people. Each project includes water tanks, pumps, wells, and taps — delivering clean, safe water directly to communities in need. In 2025, we supported 661,183 people across Yemen, including 90,647 people given access to water through water tanks.
Among the most widely cited hadiths on charitable giving is the one recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah: "The best charity is giving water." The Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, and Hanbali schools all recognize water provision as a particularly good form of Sadaqah Jariyah — ongoing charity whose reward continues as long as people benefit from it.
The Prophet (PBUH) described Sadaqah Jariyah as one of three acts whose reward continues after a person's death: "When a person dies, all their deeds end except three — a continuing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for them" (Sahih Muslim, hadith 1631).
A solar powered water well fits the definition precisely: it is installed once and continues providing benefits — clean water and time freed from collection — for a decade or more. Every person who drinks from it represents ongoing benefit flowing from a single act of giving.
Our Yemen Clean Water program funds solar powered water well installations in communities across Yemen where water access has been disrupted by conflict. Each project includes water tanks, pumps, wells, and taps, and is handed over to a community water committee with the skills to maintain it long-term.
Each well has ten shares, giving donors the opportunity to contribute toward a life-changing, long-lasting source of clean water. Donations are Sadaqah and Zakat eligible — a gift that keeps giving for generations.
A solar powered water well can be given as a gift, dedicated to a loved one, or given in someone's memory as a form of Sadaqah Jariyah.
