Ramadan Reflection #6: The Honoring of Bilal and Racism in Mecca

Equality in Islam – Bilal’s call to prayer and the rejection of racism.

When the Prophet (SAW) and his companions opened Mecca in the 8th year of Hijra, he ordered Bilal to climb the Kaaba and call the Athan. The disbelievers mocked this, using racist remarks about Bilal's status as a black man. Allah responded by reminding humanity that all were created from the same source, and the most honored in His sight are those with the most piety, not those who judge based on race.
