Afghanistan’s deadly twin 6.3 magnitude earthquakes struck early on 7 October about 20 miles from the city of Heart, killing 1,482 people in just moments.
Amid the devastation and destruction of the following days, families were then hit by a series of strong aftershocks. A staggering 157,000 have been affected and, more than two months on, they urgently still need help as they face hunger and sub-zero temperatures without a home to protect them.
Families have not only lost their loved ones but also their homes, reduced to rubble. 10,000 houses have been completely destroyed, and more than 20,000 are badly damaged. Since the quake hit during the daytime, while many men were working outdoors, more than 90% of those killed were women and children. State officials report that at least 20 villages have been flattened.
Already poor road networks and mobile phone towers have been devastated, while bad weather is making it even more difficult to begin to rebuild and recover.
Providing essential relief: Food and shelter
