Human Appeal encouraged by UN Summit for Refugees

Human Appeal has announced that it fully supports the UN action in hosting a Summit on Refugees and Migrants, today in New York and is hopeful that world leaders can join together and draw up a lasting and effective solution.

The Summit is, in the UN’s own words, “the first time the General Assembly has called for a summit at the Heads of State and Government level on large movements of refugees and migrants and it is a historic opportunity to come up with a blueprint for a better international response. It is a watershed moment to strengthen governance of international migration and a unique opportunity for creating a more responsible, predictable system for responding to large movements of refugees and migrants.”

You can find out more information about the summit on http://refugeesmigrants.un.org/summit

The UK Prime Minister Theresa May is due to address the summit.

Othman Moqbel, Human Appeal’s CEO, says “All nations must do their part and, we believe, this is an excellent first step – all world leaders, joining together, trying to work on a solution. We sincerely hope a solution, or at least the start of one, is reached.”

“Last year 65.3 million people – many of them families, many of them unaccompanied children - who, due to absolute desperation, left their home to flee conflict, to flee persecution, to flee poverty. We all need to work together to find the best way these 65.3 million people can be helped and that they are fairly, safely and appropriately distributed and that the countries that do offer refuge receive the adequate support and resources. And we hope any solution will receive everyone’s full support – every nation, every organisation and every citizen. Only by everyone working together can we make a world that works for everyone.”
