A race against time
The biggest earthquakes in 84 years have devastated south Turkey and north Syria killing over 37,000 people and rising including thousands of children. Over 8,000 buildings have been toppled and casualties could rise eight - fold, as aftershocks, freezing temperatures and damaged roads hamper rescue efforts. On Monday 6th February, two huge 7.8 and 7.5 magnitude earthquakes struck the regions of South East Turkey and North West Syria. Approximately 13.5 million people have been affected by the disaster.
People are digging through rubble with their bare hands as those trapped beneath the wreckage send voice notes to their loved ones. The death toll is expected to rise significantly still and saving lives amid the widespread destruction is a race against time.
Tens of thousands of people are injured with many more trapped in the rubble. Ongoing rescue operations are underway in a desperate bid to save lives.
The epicentre of the earthquake is a region devastated by 12 years of war, sanctions, and food and fuel shortages. Hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees, already struggling for survival amidst a bitter winter and cost-of-living crisis are ill-equipped to cope and entirely reliant on international aid to assist with this emergency.
Many families have lost their shelters in the earthquakes and over 38,000 have taken refuge in government shelters, shopping malls, community centres and even in their cars.
Communications are down, and health facilities are either damaged or under – resourced. The situation is unprecedented and continues to evolve as we race against time to save lives.
The earthquakes are the worst to hit the Turkish region in 19 years and in Syria, the worst in over a century.
